Fluxx

Fluxx - Looney Labs

Time: 30 Minutes
Players: 2-6
Times Played: 2

Comments: I played this with 5 and 6 players. The game is a bit silly but it was fairly easy to play. Rules were pretty minimal.

Notes: It was the Monty Python edition. This game while being a bit light for my tastes, has some good points.

1. Its short.
2. Its easy to learn
3. You might find a theme to suck in non-gamers

Buy = No

I would not get this game but I don't mind playing it if someone has it and wants to play it.

La Citta

La Citta - Rio Grande Games

Time: 2-3 hours
Players: 2-5
Times played: 1

Comments: I got to play this game as a 5 player game. The rules explanation took 30 minutes which IMHO is too long. As a new player it was not very clear what exactly the game goals are and what was really needed to to work on. I was not able to get any of the people who played the game before to answer that question. Then, I had to go first. After playing a couple of turns of the game, I realized in a 5 player game its a real disadvantage to go first. Worse, I had to go first twice in this game. All that really need to be explained to me was middle of the board cities need to have "arch" improvements and outer board cities are best used for farms and the 2nd or 3rd turn is a good time to drop the 3rd city. Quarries were somehow stressed as important yet they were real duds as "necessary" improvements. Marketplaces, farms and arch improvements are much more important. The game does not have a very good catchup mechanism. So, after about 30 minutes you can see your going to lose and spend 2 more hours bringing up the rear.

Notes: I did not get a good explanation of the game so that made a bad first impression. The game ran a bit too long for the 2 hours or less "standard". The Political cards seem to stagnate as there are few good ones. The only reason why they cycled was us new players were not given a good explanation of how the game works. It probably would have been a good idea for the experienced game owner to have gone first. So, basically I spent 3 hours "learning" when a 2 minute breakdown of how the game truly sets up would have made all the difference.

This game is too long. It does not have a catch up mechanism at all. Player interaction is minimal at best. It looks like the game will stagnate on replay value due to the lack of depth with the political cards. I would be reluctant to play this game again.
